概要

言語や認知にかかわる社会言語学や異文化間研究を専門としている。

1979年にカリフォルニア大学バークレー校で博士号（言語人類学）を取得。博士論文のタイトルは “Language, interaction, and sex roles in a Mayan community: a study of politeness and the position of women.”（マヤのコミュニティにおける言語、交流、性役割：ポライトネスと女性の位置づけに関する研究）。

ペネロピ・ブラウンとの共著『ポライトネス』（1978 → 19872, 邦訳 2011）が有名。
